The Benefits of Reducing Engine Emissions

  • Meet legislation: Governments around the world are introducing ever more stringent emissions legislation. OEMs must ensure that their powertrains meet this legislation or face the prospect of lost sales or fines.
  • Increase margins: A growing customer segment is environmentally aware. For this group, low emissions are an important factor in the purchasing decision.  This group will tend to be less price sensitive than the average consumer and so higher prices and thus increased margins can be gained
  • Reduced cost of ownership: Lower emissions can result in lower tax regimes imposed by local or national governments trying to incentivise the take-up of low emission vehicles to improve the environment.

Challenges to Reducing Engine Emissions

  • Changing performance targets: the engine or component will be in a constant state of development to improve one or more of the following: power, torque, weight, cost, size, NVH.
  • New applications: the engine will be tried in different applications to increase sales volumes either within or across industry segments for example passenger vehicle to small commercial vehicle or across industries for example stationary (power generation) to automotive or automotive to marine.  Or for example as prime mover to auxiliary power in an EV application
  • New environments: the engine may be sold in different geographical markets to increase sales.  These may have significantly different operating temperatures, air densities (altitude) or air compositions (pollution) than the home market.
  • New duty cycles: new customers may introduce more severe usage patterns for example the police or military environment

The Importance of Design Verification using CAE
Whenever a design is changed, for whatever reason, it is essential that the product is tested either physically or virtually to determine whether those changes have had a negative effect on its emissions.  For example a performance improvement exercise can increase in-cylinder temperatures which may increase the production of NOx.  This outcome can be minimised through good design based on a solid understanding of fluid mechanics fundamentals, chemistry and emissions reduction technologies.

When reducing emissions is the main design objective then CAE simulation can be performed to check any negative consequences on any of the other attributes including durabilityweight, NVHthermal, performance and fuel economy. For example reducing the emissions of an engine by increasing fuel injection pressures can require expensive upgrades to the FIE which may increase the total cost of the engine. Again this outcome can be mitigated through good design based on a solid understanding of fluid mechanics fundamentals, chemistry, emissions reduction technologies and advanced problem and product specific simulation tools.
